Why the Uetliberg?

Where Zurich goes for the view

The Uetliberg is the wooded mountain that rises directly behind Zurich, 871 metres high and the northern end of the Albis ridge. A railway has carried city people to the top since 1875, and it still does: the S10 leaves from the main station and stops a ten-minute walk below the summit of Uto Kulm.

Up there you find viewing terraces, a lookout tower, a hotel and restaurant, and the start of the Planet Trail — an easy ridge walk to the Felsenegg cable car. In late autumn and winter, when fog fills the lowlands, the Uetliberg is where Zurich climbs back into the sun.

What to see

From the summit to the lake

The Uetliberg is more than one viewpoint: a historic railway, a ridge walk through the solar system, a cable car — and Zurich itself at its foot.

Hiking Routes up the Uetliberg

On foot from the tram to the top

Zurich locals walk up their mountain all year. Signposted paths climb through the forest from the tram stops at Triemli and Albisgütli — from the lantern-lit Laternenweg to the steep, direct Denzlerweg — in roughly an hour to an hour and a half.

Good to know

Visiting the Uetliberg: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Is the Uetliberg worth visiting?

Yes. It is the easiest mountain view in Switzerland to reach from a city: about 25 minutes by train from Zürich main station and a short walk give you Zurich, the lake and the Alps in one panorama. It costs little, takes two to three hours and works in every season.

How do I get to the Uetliberg from Zurich?

Take the S10 train from Zürich HB to the terminus “Uetliberg” — about 20 to 25 minutes — then walk around ten minutes uphill to the summit. You can also hike up from the tram stops at Triemli or Albisgütli in 1 to 1.5 hours. See our getting here guide.

Is the Uetliberg free?

The mountain, the paths and the viewing terraces are free. You pay for the train (unless you walk), a small fee for the lookout tower, and whatever you eat or drink.

Is the Uetliberg covered by the Zürich Card or the Swiss Travel Pass?

The S10 to the Uetliberg has been included in both in recent years. Conditions can change, so check the current terms when you buy your pass.

What is the best time to go up?

On a clear day, mornings are best for the Alps and late afternoons for the city and sunset. From about November to January the summit is often in sunshine above a sea of fog — check the webcam before you go.
